First Hat Success/Failure

First Hat

My very first hat! I made it using the “Stitch ‘n Bitch” pattern Hot Head by Alex Zorn (p.162). I made it using Knit Picks Swish Bulky Yarn. The pattern called for 4 different colors of yarn, but I decided to make it in a two color pattern to match a scarf I had recently made with the same yarn. I really enjoyed making this hat, I couldn’t believe I was making a hat! Hats always seemed complicated to me: knitting in the round, circular needles, double pointed needles. This pattern however was easy and called for straight needles. The only difficult part for me was the concept of the “mattress stitch” to sew back the seam which was new to me. But I did it! Sadly, however, I made some “slight miscalculations” and it essentially is a child’s hat. It’s too SMALL to fit my head! But hey I’m still proud of my first hat!

All you new knitters who are afraid to branch out of scarves or think making a hat is too difficult: just try it. Find an easy pattern and have a go at it. The worst that could happen is that you will have to start over several times, it will be unwearable, or too small. But you are likely to find that making hats is not as difficult as you first thought!
